First race of 2016 – St. Patrick’s Day 4 Miler

I decided to put some effort into my fitness in 2016 after taking a few months off from running and focusing on weights/insanity. In 2015 I was pretty active but didn’t take things seriously. So, my first race of 2016 was a 4 miler and I’m pretty happy with the results.

Grand Rapids Half Marathon

Over the past weekend I was up in Michigan visiting family and decided to signup and run the Grand Rapids Half Marathon. Despite having a cold I managed to pull off a new PR for a half marathon. The course was pretty flat, the weather was cool.

All in all a great race if you are looking for something in West Michigan in October.

Rocks n Roots trail series 30k

On Feb 7th I ran the second part of the Rocks n Roots trail series. This race consisted on 3×6.2 mile loops, this time around it was really slippery and muddy.

I had a great time and met some really cool people! Trail running is starting to become a favorite and I’m looking forward to the Leadville Heavy Half in June.

NHL Allstar 5k in Columbus Ohio

Yesterday was a really fun day doing the NHL Allstar 5k in Columbus Ohio. The race kicked off at 9am, the weather was chilly at 25 degree’s. Over 2,900 people came to run in the race and the atmosphere was really fun as well. This will go down as one of the best 5k’s I’ve done to date, it was organized really well.

I placed 57th out of 2,977 and 6th in my age group out of 397 (30-39). My garmin FR620 tracked 3.28 miles at 21:23, 5k at 20:35 with a pace of 6:37 and the official time was 21:23 at 6:53 pace.

Rocks and Roots Trail Series 20k

Rocks and Roots Trail Series 20k

A few months ago I signed up for the Rocks and Roots trail series here in Ohio. The race had an option where you could register for two races one in January and on in February. Today, was the first race and it was a 20k (12.4 miles). The weather was around 20 degrees, snowy with a mild wind.

5 Mile Mark

A few things I did that I wont repeat in February

  • The water and waterline in my Camelbak froze. Bummer..
  • I wore a pair of injini tow socks and covered them with a pair of Feetures thick socks. (I got some serious blisters with this combo)

What I will do again and differently

  • I wore three layers, a light base ($5 Costco special dry/warm shirt, who knew it was really decent), a thicker smartwool layer and a thicker REI running coat.
  • I’ll double my socks, but the bottom layer will be a pair of Wrightsocks. I have the best luck with those.
  • My brooks pure grit 3 head up nicely.

I finished 20 out of 74 in the 20k pool. I’m pretty happy with that with a time of 2 hours and 12 minutes.

I loved this race and it was a really good way to kick off 2015.

4.6 Mile run on the books..

Today’s run was good, the wind wasn’t as bad as yesterday so I decided to push further. I did my normal 4.6 mile route keeping a 7:52/mile average pace.

Next week I’ll be doing treadmill runs in hotels as I’ll be back on the road..

My 2015 Running Goals

I decided to set some 2015 running goals for myself and I got the year kicked off with a pretty decent 3.7 mile run. It was sunny here in Ohio, but cold at 18 degrees. I’m trying to get myself used to running outside in the winter. I’m not a fan of treadmill running, I need to work on that too. I kept the pace pretty average at 8:10/mile completing the run in 30:16 and burning around 494C.

What are my 2015 running goals?
  • Run everyday this year regardless if its 1 mile or 26.2 miles and document the runs here. If I can’t run I’ll supplement with a cardio indoor workout (insanity, t25 etc).
  • Run at least 2 races per month (5k, 10k, 15k)
  • Complete another marathon
  • Maintain a strength training routine

Over the past two years I’ve lost over 100 pounds and this year my focus is going to be on getting faster, eating cleaner and finishing a marathon in 3 hours and 30 minutes and beat my previous time of 3 hours 59 minutes.
